MYP Assessment Task Bank

This investigation is meant to be one of the first ones where students provide algebraic formulas as part of their descriptions of patterns. For that reason, this assessment was designed to start with a very basic pattern and gradually moved towards a more complex one. In Part A, the two variables being considered are equal to each other. In Part B, the linear pattern is a slightly more complex and requiring more analysis on the student’s part. In Part C the pattern is similar to that in Part B, but is open-ended and requires students to select problem-solving strategies before applying them.

In this assessments students apply their knowledge and skills in an imaginary real-life situation, where they are to suggest the perfect location for an oil rig, which is equal distance away from other already established oil rigs. Students need to use the midpoint and distance formulas to calculate the distances between locations of oil rigs on a coordinate grid. In addition, students need to develop a method to calculate the optimal location that minimizes the distance between three locations.

In this assessment, students investigate patterns in the unit circle, namely patterns in the value of the three major trigonometric rations (sine, cosine, and tangent) in the four quadrants of the unit circle. By the end of the assessment, students are able to write a general formula for each of these three trigonometric ratios.

In this assessment, students investigate tessellations and how (i.e. with what geometrical transformations) they can be made. In addition, students look into the connection(s) between Mathematics and (an)other subject(s).

In this assessment, students investigate patterns in infinite radicals by examining a simple infinite radical first and analyzing what happens for very large values of n. With further examples, students discover patterns that can help them find a general formula for infinite radicals in the given form.
