This investigation is meant to be one of the first ones where students provide algebraic formulas as part of their descriptions of patterns. For that reason, this assessment was designed to start with a very basic pattern and gradually moved towards a more complex one. In Part A, the two variables being considered are equal to each other. In Part B, the linear pattern is a slightly more complex and requiring more analysis on the student’s part. In Part C the pattern is similar to that in Part B, but is open-ended and requires students to select problem-solving strategies before applying them.
